Learn the History of the Women’s Suffrage Movement – Finger Lakes New York – August 26, 2020 will mark the 100-year anniversary of women in the United States being given the right to vote in US elections. Known as the suffrage movement, it began in the Finger Lakes community.

The summer of 2020 will be the perfect time to visit this shining region. When the sun is shining and warming the waters of the Finger Lakes of Seneca Falls, New York, it will be the perfect time to reflect on how far the nation has come in a hundred years – as well as how far it still has to go.

The Finger Lakes are comprised of 11 different shimmering bodies of water and more than 100 wineries. It’s also home to the convention that was the launching pad of the women’s rights movement. To celebrate this occasion, the region penned a list of a hundred ways we can continue improving women’s rights, which culminated with a women’s march held in January of 2020.

When the weather begins to warm up for the summer, lovers of the outdoors – women only – will participate in the Woman Tours, a three-day cycling trip planned for July. The planned route includes tours of several major sites throughout Seneca Falls and the city of Rochester, New York. One of the highlights of the trip will be a stop at the courthouse made famous for the trial of Susan B. Anthony. She was tried at this courthouse for the then-criminal act of voting as a female. The Finger Lakes region also plans a 200th Birthday celebration to honor Susan B. Anthony in 2020. Also included in the route is a tour of the Wesleyan Chapel where the first convention for women’s rights was held.

Finger Lakes is roughly 250 miles to Manhattan’s north. You can fly into Syracuse or into Rochester, but to see more of upstate New York, you can also board an Amtrak at Penn Plaza to Syracuse. Once you arrive in the region, you should rent a car so you can explore all the Finger Lakes region has to offer.
